We are located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Our facilities include 296 patient rooms, 50 ICU beds, 40 inpatient acute psychiatric beds, 27 ED beds, and a 7-story outpatient building where we are able to treat and provide care to active duty and retired Service Members, their families, and civilian contractors in the DC, Virginia, and Maryland area.
Walter Reed has a seasoned history and is known to have national and international subject matter experts in multiple fields. We are also fortunate to have a significant portion of our combined trained attending physicians staff many of our rotations. The supervision and experience residents receive from them is invaluable and unparalleled.
The 5-year program is divided evenly between psychiatric and internal medicine rotations to foster a comprehensive, holistic approach to health care. We use a 4+1 schedule meaning every 5th week will be in the Internal Medicine Resident Continuity Clinic followed by a golden weekend (two days off!). This allows consistency with our paneled patients to form strong bonds over the course of residency. At the end of 5 years, residents will be board eligible in both Internal Medicine and Psychiatry.
There are multiple off-site rotations for our residents that include Fort Belvoir, Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute, Children’s National Medical Center, National Intrepid Center for Excellence, and Washington DC VA for psychiatry specific locations. Internal medicine rotations can be completed at Inova Fairfax, National Institutes of Health, Washington DC VA, Washington Hospital Center, and Virginia Hospital Center. There are also additional opportunities such as sub-attending roles at Navy Hospital Guam and Landstuhl, Germany or providing international relief efforts on the USNS Comfort. If you have a specific interest, we can find a place for you!
We are happy that you are interested in the program, and please let us know if you have any questions or are interested in scheduling rotations and interviews with the button below!
